For 20 years now, GEICO has recognized and honored our Military Service Award winners. The outstanding Military members you see here and on the following pages are being recognized for their work in Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention, Traffic Safety and Accident Prevention, and Fire Safety and Fire Prevention. The recipients represent each branch of the Military including the Guard/Reserve communities. The work of these young men and women includes not only what they do for their commands, but what they do for the communities in which they live and work. GEICO is honored to be able to recognize such outstanding Military members and citizens.
Eric D. Mejia is the Army recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in fire safety and fire prevention.
Mejia is the Fire Safety Officer for the 3rd Battalion, 6th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, Fort Bliss, TX.
Mejia is a combat veteran of the Global War on Terrorism having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom where he saw first hand the devastating effects of unsafe acts carried out by the Iraqi people on a daily basis. He took these valuable lessons learned in combat and applied them to his duties as Safety Officer within his unit.
He has taken his personal time to ensure all members of his unit have been properly trained within 30 days of their arrival. He ensures everyone knows and understands evacuation routes, use of safety equipment, and notification procedures required in accordance with all Army regulations. As a result of his hard work, he was awarded the 3rd Battalion NCO of the Quarter twice in 2007.
Mejia has one child.
Camilla M. Lawson is the Marine Corps recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for her work in traffic safety and accident prevention.
Lawson is the Curriculum Administrator for Alpha Company, Marine Corps Communications-Electronics School (MCCES) at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, 29 Palms, CA.
After transferring to 29 Palms in 2006, Lawson implemented a motor vehicle safety program at MCCES which did not exist. This program provides six hours of required annual training, along with safety "stand downs" prior to weekends and holidays. This training includes safety issues such as ATV safety, Drinking and Driving, Seat Belt use, and Flash Flood Safety. In addition, she implemented vehicle safety inspections for Marines prior to taking long weekend trips, PCS moves, and TAD assignments. As a direct result of her initiatives, Lawson trains approximately 3000 Marines per month and there have been no motor vehicle fatalities this past year.
Lawson has one child.
Brian E. Sullivan is the Navy recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in fire safety and fire prevention.
Sullivan is the Air Field Facilities Leading Petty Officer at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, VA. He provides direct leadership and mentorship to sixty military personnel and nine civilian employees. His division successfully manifested over 14,000 passengers and 3,500 tons of cargo. He also is involved in the command's indoctrination program and Lean Six Sigma process improvement program.
His community involvement includes assisting in emergency and fire rescue procedures at Phoebus Fire Company. Notable were his response to 110 automobile accidents, 40 structure fires, and 102 EMS calls. His professional manner and organizational acumen earned him the prestigious "Firefighter of the Year" award by the city of Hampton, VA and he also earned the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Award last year.
Sullivan has one child.
Varnell L. Johnson is the Air Force recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in alcohol and drug abuse prevention.
Johnson is the Mental Health Command Functional Manager assigned to Headquarters, Air Education and Training, Surgeon General Directorate, Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX.
Johnson manages the largest drug testing program in the U. S. Air Force. His involvement has led the command to a 23 percent reduction in underage drinking and driving incidents, and a 37 percent drop in drug use, saving the Air Force 3.6 million dollars in lost training and treatment costs. He also spearheads the "Drug Education for Youth" program in his local community, which has provided more than 5,000 hours of education to 15,000 children at public schools and youth centers. His hard work and perseverance earned him the Headquarters, AETC Senior Non Commissioned Officer of the Year award for last year.
Johnson is married to his wife Tracey, an active duty SMSgt, and has 3 children.
Michael R. Anselme is the Coast Guard recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in fire safety and fire prevention.
Anselme is the Electrical Leading Petty Officer for USCG Sector Field Office, Valdez, AK.
Anselme's volunteer work in the community is extensive. As a volunteer for Valdez Volunteer Fire Service, he has contributed over 720 hours of community service since last year. As a result of his hard work, he was recognized as the "Volunteer of the Year" in Valdez. He is also a certified EMT in the state of Alaska and provides training to personnel in his EMT unit. His unit deploys to remote sites in Alaska where availability of medical care is not present. He also volunteers and develops relationships with the local community providing presentations to elementary schools and other organizations in need of training. When time permits, he also provides smoke detector training and fire safety training to military and civilian housing residents in the city of Valdez.
Anselme is married and has six children.
Alan Cote is the National Guard/Reserve recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in alcohol and drug abuse prevention.
Cote is the Senior Observer Controller Trainer for the 2nd Battle Command Training Group, 2nd BDE, 75th Division, U. S. Army Reserve, in Bristol, RI. In addition his other duties include Tactical Operations Center Instructor, Intelligence NCO, Operations NCO, Training NCO, and Logistics NCO.
He is the commanding officer of the local VFW unit in Smithfield RI (which boasts over 400 members) which recently was recognized in the local newspaper for it's involvement in the Annual Child Safety Day event which focused on alcohol and drug abuse prevention for young men and women in their community. More than 60 personnel benefited directly from his involvement and leadership. He was also recognized by the Army for his outstanding safety program as it fell into the top 25% of all safety programs Army wide. His genuine concern for the welfare of others is evident in all that he does.
Cote and his wife, Tanya, have three children.
