Mechanical Breakdown Insurance Explained

Printer Friendly

MBI helps protect you from expensive auto repair bills when your vehicle experiences a mechanical failure. MBI covers cost for repairs to the engine, drive axle, transmission, steering, suspension, brakes, air conditioning, cooling, electrical and more.* Take a moment to review the following frequently-asked questions and their answers:

Is MBI Coverage Similar to a Dealer's Extended Warranty?

Typically, GEICO MBI provides much broader coverage than a dealer's extended warranty because all mechanical parts of the vehicle are covered*. By adding MBI to your policy, you only pay a small premium each policy period rather than hundreds of additional dollars at the time you purchase your vehicle.

Is it Difficult to Submit an MBI Claim?

No. Just call toll free at 1-800-443-7411 for the MBI claims department or go to the policyholder service center on geico.com to report an MBI claim online. Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In most states, for coverage to be applicable, you must obtain authorization prior to any repair work being done. See policy for details.

Can I Take My Vehicle to a Repair Shop of My Choice for a Covered Repair?

Yes, you may use the licensed repair shop of your choice, unless the repair is covered by a recall, voluntary repair program or the manufacturer's warranty. In those cases you would need to take your vehicle back to a dealer who services the specific make and model.

Dealer extended service contracts usually encourage you to have repairs made at the dealership where the vehicle was purchased. This could force you to return to a repair shop you don't care to use. GEICO MBI allows you to use any licensed repair shop. This could be especially important if you travel or move — MBI travels with you!

What Happens if I Breakdown While Traveling, Especially Out of State?

If you ever have a breakdown, accident, or need assistance in any of the 50 states or the District of Columbia, you're covered. We are only a phone call away, 24 hours a day.

When Should I Buy MBI Coverage for My New Vehicle?

You should call and add MBI to your policy as soon as possible after the vehicle is purchased. GEICO MBI can only be added if the vehicle is less than 15 months old, the odometer reading is less than 15,000 miles, and you are the first title holder. Ask a GEICO representative if your vehicle is eligible.

How Long Will My GEICO MBI Coverage Last?

Because MBI is part of your auto insurance policy, you may renew the coverage, up to 100,000 miles or seven (7) years, whichever comes first.** During this time, GEICO MBI will pay the cost of covered mechanical repairs (minus the deductible).

How Do I Pay for MBI?

You actually pay for MBI as a coverage on your auto policy. There are no separate payments to make. GEICO gives you the choice of several plans for paying your auto insurance premium. You may pay in full or select an installment plan - whatever fits your budget. And since you only pay for coverage one policy period at a time, you never pay for coverage you can't use.

Dealers usually add the entire cost of their extended service contracts to the amount you pay for your new vehicle right up front or they add it into the amount you finance. If you decide to sell your vehicle after a few years, you've paid for service you'll never receive, plus interest. That's one more way GEICO helps you reduce the high cost of keeping your vehicle on the road.
