Vehicle Damage Basics

Below are a few basic steps to follow when you've been in an accident:

As soon as possible after the accident:

  • Take reasonable steps to protect your vehicle. For example, if you have a broken window, cover it with plastic or park in a garage.
  • Determine if your vehicle is drivable. Do not operate the vehicle if it is not safe to do so, or if driving it will cause further damage. Don't worry; if your vehicle is not drivable, one of our auto damage adjusters will make arrangements to inspect it and have it towed to a repair facility if necessary.
  • If your vehicle was towed, find out where it was taken.
  • If your vehicle is drivable, we'll make an appointment for you to take it to the inspection site most convenient for you (see below).
  • If you haven't already done so, call GEICO to report your claim and arrange for a damage estimate.

If you take your vehicle to one of our inspection sites:

  • One of our auto damage adjusters will estimate the amount of accident-related damage to your vehicle. In most cases, the adjuster will issue payment for this damage at the time of inspection. This appointment should take about 30 minutes.
  • Be sure to take your driver's license and vehicle registration.
  • Take receipts for any accident-related out-of-pocket expenses you may have incurred, such as tow bills or tire repair.
  • Don't hesitate to ask the adjuster to answer your questions. Our goal is to keep you informed and make sure you understand each step of the process.

When choosing a repair facility:

  • You can use any shop of your choice. GEICO does not require customers to use a specific shop or group of shops.
  • Consider using our Auto Repair Xpress® program, our unique, hassle-free approach to resolving vehicle damage claims. Get a damage estimate, a rental vehicle*, and guaranteed collision repairs all at one convenient location. Ask your adjuster for details, or use our interactive shop locator to find an Auto Repair Xpress® location near you.

*Check with your adjuster to determine if GEICO will pay for your rental vehicle.

Before leaving a drivable vehicle to be repaired:

  • Call the shop to schedule a good time to leave your vehicle. Try to choose a drop-off time early in the week to avoid weekend delays.
  • Make sure the shop has the necessary parts and is ready to begin repairs immediately; otherwise, your vehicle may be out of commission for longer than necessary.
  • Ask the shop when the repairs will be complete.

While your vehicle is being repaired:

  • Stay in touch with the shop to be sure repairs are progressing as scheduled.
  • Additional accident-related damage to your vehicle may become apparent after the shop begins repairs. Your adjuster will work directly with the shop to arrange for inspection of and payment for any additional, or supplemental, damage.

When picking up your vehicle after repairs:

  • Call the shop to verify that repairs are complete.
  • Check the repaired area of the vehicle carefully to be sure you're satisfied with the shop's work.
  • If the repairs are not satisfactory, notify the shop immediately. If you have difficulty, call your adjuster for assistance.
  • Be prepared to pay the shop directly for any amount you may owe them, such as your deductible. Take any checks GEICO has issued for the damage.
