WASHINGTON, D.C., May 7, 2008 - Gunnery Sgt. Camilla M. Lawson is the Marine Corps recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for her work in traffic safety and accident prevention. She was presented her award by GEICO CEO Tony Nicely at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 28.
Gunnery Sgt. Lawson currently serves as the curriculum administrator for Alpha Company, Marine Corps Communications-Electronics School (MCCES) at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in 29 Palms, Calif.
After transferring to 29 Palms in 2006, Gunnery Sergeant Lawson implemented two major safety programs where she trains approximately 3,000 marines per month. The motor vehicle safety program at MCCES provides six hours of required annual training, along with safety "stand downs" prior to weekends and holidays. The training includes safety issues such as ATV safety, drinking and driving, seat belt use, and flash flood safety. The vehicle safety inspections program provides training for marines prior to taking long weekend trips, PCS moves, and TAD assignments.
There have been no motor vehicle fatalities this past year as a direct result of her initiatives.
