WASHINGTON, D.C., May 7, 2008 - Petty Officer Michael Anselme is the Coast Guard recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in fire safety and fire prevention. He was presented his award by GEICO CEO Tony Nicely at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 28.
Anselme is the Electrical Leading Petty Officer for USCG Sector Field Office in Valdez, Alaska. He is a certified EMT and provides training to personnel in his unit, which deploys to remote sites in Alaska where medical care is not readily available.
Aside from his duties on base, Anselme is a volunteer for the Valdez Volunteer Fire Service. He has contributed more than 720 hours of community service since last year. As a result of his hard work, he was recognized as the "Volunteer of the Year" in Valdez.
When times permits, Anselme provides smoke detector and fire safety training to military and civilian housing residents in the city of Valdez and to elementary schools.
