WASHINGTON, D.C., May 7, 2008 - Master Sgt. Varnell Johnson is the Air Force recipient of the 2007 GEICO Military Service Award for his work in alcohol and drug abuse prevention. He was presented his award by GEICO CEO Tony Nicely at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 28.
Master Sgt. Johnson is the mental health command functional manager assigned to Headquarters, Air Education and Training, Surgeon General Directorate, Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
Master Sgt. Johnson manages the largest drug testing program in the U. S. Air Force. His involvement has led the command to a 23 percent reduction in underage drinking and driving incidents, and a 37 percent drop in drug use, saving the Air Force 3.6 million dollars in lost training and treatment costs.
He also spearheads the Drug Education for Youth program in his local community, which has provided more than 5,000 hours of education to 15,000 children at public schools and youth centers.
His hard work and perseverance earned him the Headquarters, AETC (Air Education and Training Command) Senior Non Commissioned Officer of the Year award for last year.
