FORT CAMPBELL, Ky., May 5, 2008 - Joseph R. Baker of Fort Campbell, Ky., is the 2007 recipient of the GEICO Public Service Award for his work in the field of fire prevention and safety. As a member of the Fort Campbell Fire and Emergency Services for 14 years, he serves as the deputy fire chief and senior fire prevention officer and inspector.
Baker develops programs related to Fort Campbell's Fire Prevention Week, considered one of the best in the Department of Defense. He is also responsible for 74 child development and family care centers and for safely housing the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), the U.A. Army Garrison and several tenant organizations. Baker's focus on fire extinguisher readiness led him to institute a fire extinguisher exchange program, create a bar code tracking system to accurately assess the service life of each fire extinguisher and develop a monthly fire extinguisher training course.
Baker has received numerous awards including the South East Region Organization's Army Fire Officer of the Year in 2002 and the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service in 2006 for fire prevention and protection measures during a vice presidential visit.
GEICO's Public Service Awards each year honor five civilian career federal employees and retirees for outstanding achievements in the fields of substance abuse prevention and treatment, fire prevention and safety, physical rehabilitation, and traffic safety and accident prevention. Each will receive a $2,500 cash award, and all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for a special recognition ceremony, and a commemorative plaque.
