FORT BRAGG, N.C., May 5, 2008 - Joseph W. Hafner of Fort Bragg, N.C., is the 2007 recipient of the GEICO Public Service Award for his work in the field of safety and occupational health. Previously serving for more than 20 years as a highly-decorated member of the U.S. Army, Hafner is the safety and occupational health specialist at Fort Bragg.
Known as "Safety Joe," Hafner is committed to providing soldiers with the best safety and auto crash prevention information considering number one killer of soldiers in non-combat situations is vehicle fatalities in privately-owned cars and trucks.
Last year alone, Hafner led safety briefings for more than 7,500 soldiers and was the primary point of contact for the Installation Safety Fair attended by more than 6,000 people. His contributions have directly impacted more than 140,000 personnel at the base and have resulted in a significant reduction in vehicle crashes and fatalities over the past 12 months.
Hafner began his military career in the Infantry where he served the majority of his time in the Airborne and Special Operations community, supported parachute systems and served as test officer for the Land Warrior System. He attended numerous military schools and received many decorations including three Meritorious Service medals, nine Army Achievement medals, Saudi-Arabia-Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, two National Defense Service medals, Southwest Asia Service Medal (Bronze Service Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Kuwaiti Liberation Medal and numerous others.
GEICO's Public Service Awards each year honor five civilian career federal employees and retirees for outstanding achievements in the fields of substance abuse prevention and treatment, fire prevention and safety, physical rehabilitation, and traffic safety and accident prevention. Each will receive a $2,500 cash award, and all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. for a special recognition ceremony, and a commemorative plaque.
