At GEICO, We Care About The Environment

GEICO is concerned about the environment and requires selected auto body repair shops to pass an environmental and safety training program. Participating auto body repair shops in the GEICO Auto Repair Xpress® (GEICO Auto R/X) program and the GEICO Guaranteed Repair Shop (GRS) program, must have a minimum of one person at each facility complete this online training program.

Working with the Coordinating Committee on Automotive Repair (CCAR) within the United States Environmental Protection Agency Compliance Assistance Center, GEICO repair shops have Safety and Pollution Prevention (SP2) training online that is specific to auto body repair.

"We want our repair shops to have a clear awareness of the responsibilities required in handling the paints, antifreeze and other chemicals needed for vehicle repair. We also want to be sure that the technicians are trained on all compliance issues to keep our policyholders and employees safe when they are at the facility," says GEICO Assistant Vice-President of Claims Bill Mayer.

GEICO was the first recipient of CCAR's prestigious Environmental and Safety Stewardship award given in December of 2003. "GEICO is truly a steward of the environment" said Lirel Holt, Chairman of CCAR. "When we presented a practical way to verify that their GRS shops were properly trained, GEICO executives said without hesitation, 'This is the right thing to do' and the program was put in place across the United States."

By assisting CCAR, which is a not-for-profit organization, GEICO provides deeper environmental stewardship to schools and future repair technicians. The Safety and Pollution Prevention Program (SP2) is provided free to all automotive and career technical schools in the United States. As of January 1, 2004, over 1,200 schools and 77,000 students will have had online training for environmental and safety issues.

GEICO was the first major supporter of the training which has now been adopted by General Motors, DaimlerChrysler, Toyota and Automotive YES for their schools as well.
